Woven or Cotton Filled Non-Woven
What's the difference between Gauze and Non-Woven Gauze? Looking at the pictures above, you can tell which one looks like it has a woven texture (the left image). Gauze is made through a weaving process, creating a strong, resistant-to-stretch sponge and an abrasive surface. On the other hand, nonwovens (the right image) are generally made from 100% cotton fibers OR an absorbent blend of fibers, and are manufactured in through a pressing process, joining the fibers together through pressure, rather than weaving, creating a softer surface. See the close-up of the nonwoven wipe at right? Both gauze and nonwoven sponges are generally manufactured in 4-ply or higher, and folded into a 2", 3", or 4" pad. The number of plys is the number of repeated layers, and the higher the number of plys, the thicker the sponge in its folded form.
